The Hawaiian Lion

From Thomas Lehrich, author of The Hawaiian Lion, the very first Backpacker Billy and Shave book, talks about recent volcanic activity:

Kilauea’s current eruption in Halema’uma’u crater within Kaluapele (the summit caldera) began on December 23, 2024. There have now been over 22 episodes, separated by pauses in activity. All eruptive activity remains within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Kilauea has been erupting almost continuously since January 3, 1983, with its longest eruption phase lasting over 35 years until 2018, making it one of the most active volcanoes globally.

In Hawaiian mythology, Kilauea is the home of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. Many locals honor her with offerings and respect the volcano as a sacred site.

You can view some really cool webcam video streams of the volcano.
