Book Review: Nothing Like Having A Brother

Five Red Barns (Stars) for Nothing Like Having A Brother – By Jonathan Levin

Illustrator James Scales Jr

Review by Thomas Lehrich, Children’s Author & Founder of Red Barn Publishing

As someone who has spent a lifetime writing stories for young readers and publishing books that celebrate adventure, and kindness, I am always eager to discover new voices in children’s literature. Nothing Like Having A Brother by Boston-based author and attorney Jonathan S. Levin is a delightful addition to books for ages 4–9. We know that families will return to the book again and again.

At first glance, it might surprise some to see a lawyer step into the realm of children’s books. But those who know Jonathan, or those who read this book will understand that he brings the same empathy, patience, and joyful curiosity to storytelling that he brings to his work.

Nothing Like Having A Brother doesn’t just tell a story; it opens a window into the world of siblings.

From the very first page, young readers are drawn into the life brothers whose differences are as vivid as their connection. The narrative is both playful and pedagogical.

Jonathan understands what children feel and reflected on the pages through the dynamics of the brothers.

The high quality illustrations by illustrator James Scales Jr and a fun and readable children’s story makes this a five barn book.

Red Barn gives the book five red barns and we believe this will be a stand out book for children in 2026!
